Josh Bernoff: Writing Without Bullshit
People spend only 36 seconds on the average online news article. None of us were trained to write for this cluttered read-on-screen world. In this speech, you’ll learn the truth about how people actually read – or don’t read! – what you write and how to stand out with front-loaded, powerful writing free of toxic elements like passive voice, jargon, and weasel words. And since we know you work in the real world, we’ll also cover techniques for managing your time and your colleagues.

About Josh Bernoff:
Josh Bernoff is the author of Writing Without Bullshit: Boost Your Career by
Saying What You Mean ( The Globe and Mail called it “a Strunk
and White for the modern knowledge worker.”

Lilly Dancyger: Freelancing For Mainstream Outlets
In this session, an experienced freelance writer and editor will discuss details of how to pitch different kinds of pieces (op-eds, personal essays, reported features) to different kinds of publications (the online pages of major news outlets like the Washington Post and the Guardian, glossy magazines, and literary outlets), as well as general best practices for freelancing for mainstream outlets, dos and don'ts of pitching, and the smartest ways to get started. There will be a q&a portion to address your most burning questions about freelancing.
